Spring Gear Check – 5 Must-Have Items for April Fly Fishing in the Driftless
Gear tips for Spring fishing in the Driftless
GEAR REVIEWS

Spring in the Driftless can be a little unpredictable. One day it’s sunny and 65, the next you’re breaking ice off your guides. Here's a quick review of five pieces of gear I always bring with me this time of year—and why you should too.
1. Packable Rain Jacket
April showers sneak up quick, and you don’t want to be soaked 2 miles from the car. Look for something lightweight and breathable. A basic Simms or Patagonia shell does the trick.
💡 Pro tip: Keep it in your pack even on sunny days. The Driftless doesn’t always check the forecast.
2. Fluorocarbon Tippet (5X-6X)
Water’s still clear this time of year. Fluorocarbon helps with stealth and sink rate—especially useful for nymphing scuds and midges. I like Rio and Scientific Anglers, but anything decent will do the job.
3. Fly Box With Spring Staples
Keep these in rotation:
Coulee Scuds
Pink Squirrels
Zebra Midges
Klinkenhammer dries
Small olive buggers
Organize by water column—dries, emergers, nymphs, streamers. Saves time when fish change moods on you.
4. Hip Pack or Chest Sling
April fishing usually means walking a lot of ground. A comfy pack lets you travel light while keeping the essentials close. Fishpond and Orvis make solid options.
5. Polarized Sunglasses
Essential for spotting fish and reading the water. Get a pair with amber or copper lenses—they cut glare and boost contrast, especially on cloudy spring days.
That’s my Driftless spring gear rundown. No frills, just stuff that actually makes your day easier—and keeps you fishing when the weather turns.
